I agree, that when the visitor's language isn't detected they are often too scared of all the foreign language gibberish to notice a little text link. But, in those cases when users are landed in the proper language version for their browser settings the icon may not be necessary any longer.</description>

yes are right- but - I offer WP themes - so  I I had to write articles in english. But my Website is not a bilingual website. First I tried without flags. "This article in english" *dieser Artikel in deutsch". 45% my users haven't found the correct page. 

Now I'm using flags and this sentences and users find their language.

To use flags is hard for me because I'm from Austria - but  *my * flag is not so common than the flag from Germany. ;)

Users would like to find all in "one second" - sometimes I'm sure to read three or five words more is too long. ;)

And after this comment you know why my blog is not bilingual. The grammer of css, xhtml, php is easier than english grammer ;)
